MOLE SCREENING
Moles are a normal and common feature of the skin, and most are completely harmless. However, changes in moles can sometimes be an early sign of skin cancer, including melanoma. This is why professional mole screening plays a vital role in maintaining long-term skin health.
At Adare Dermatology in Chelsea, mole screening is offered as a medical service focused on early detection, accurate diagnosis, and patient reassurance. All assessments are carried out by qualified doctors in a registered medical clinic, using evidence-based techniques and appropriate diagnostic tools.
What Is Mole Screening?
Mole screening is a clinical examination of the skin to assess moles, pigmented lesions, and other marks that may require monitoring or further investigation. The aim is to identify lesions that are:
- Benign and require no action
- Atypical and should be monitored
- Suspicious and may need biopsy or removal
Early detection is crucial. When skin cancers are identified at an early stage, treatment outcomes are significantly improved.
Why Mole Screening Is Important
Skin cancer rates have increased over recent decades, particularly in fair-skinned populations and in individuals with a history of sun exposure. Even people who are careful with sun protection can develop concerning moles.
You should consider mole screening if you:
- Have many moles or atypical moles
- Have noticed a new mole appearing in adulthood
- Have a mole that has changed in size, shape, colour, or texture
- Have a personal or family history of skin cancer
- Have experienced significant sun exposure or sunburns
- Want reassurance about your skin
Importantly, not all concerning moles are obvious to the untrained eye. Professional assessment allows subtle warning signs to be identified early.
Mole Screening Services at Adare Dermatology
Adare Dermatology provides comprehensive mole screening services, tailored to individual risk factors and concerns.
1. Targeted Mole Checks
For patients concerned about a specific mole or lesion, a focused examination can be performed. The doctor will assess the area clinically and, where appropriate, using dermoscopy to examine structures beneath the skin surface.
2. Full Skin Examinations
For patients with multiple moles or increased risk, a full-body skin examination may be recommended. This involves a systematic assessment of the skin from head to toe, ensuring no areas are overlooked.
3. Dermoscopic Assessment
Dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows doctors to evaluate pigmented lesions in greater detail. It improves diagnostic accuracy and helps distinguish benign moles from lesions that may require further investigation.
4. Monitoring and Follow-Up
Not all moles need immediate removal. Some may be monitored over time for changes. Adare Dermatology provides structured follow-up where appropriate, with clear guidance on what changes to look out for.
5. Biopsy and Referral
If a mole appears suspicious, the doctor will discuss next steps, which may include biopsy or referral for surgical removal and histological analysis. Patients are guided carefully through this process with clear explanations and support.

When Should You Book a Mole Check?
You should consider booking a mole screening appointment if:
- You notice any change in a mole
- A mole looks different from others on your body
- A lesion becomes itchy, painful, or bleeds
- You have not had a skin check before and have risk factors
- You want peace of mind about your skin health
Regular mole screening can be especially valuable for individuals with higher risk, but it is also appropriate for anyone seeking reassurance.
The Importance of Early Detection
Early detection remains the most effective tool in managing skin cancer. Mole screening does not replace sun protection or self-examination, but it adds a critical layer of professional oversight.
At Adare Dermatology, the goal of mole screening is not to cause alarm, but to detect issues early, monitor appropriately, and provide reassurance wherever possible.
If you are concerned about a mole or would like a professional skin check, booking a mole screening appointment is a proactive step towards protecting your long-term skin health.
