MOLE REMOVAL
Moles are common skin growths that most people develop at some point in their lives. While the majority of moles are harmless, some may change over time or cause concern due to appearance, irritation, or potential health risks. At Adare Dermatology, we provide expert mole assessment and safe, medically led mole removal when clinically indicated.
Our priority is accurate diagnosis, patient reassurance, and excellent cosmetic and medical outcomes.
What Is a Mole?
A mole (also known as a naevus) is a cluster of pigmented skin cells that can appear anywhere on the body. Moles vary in colour, size, shape, and texture. Some are present from birth, while others develop over time, particularly during childhood and early adulthood.
Most moles are benign. However, changes in a mole can sometimes indicate skin cancer, including melanoma, which is why professional assessment is so important.
When Should a Mole Be Checked?
You should seek a dermatology assessment if a mole:
- Changes in size, shape, or colour
- Becomes asymmetrical or irregular
- Starts to bleed, crust, or itch
- Becomes painful or inflamed
- Looks different from your other moles (“the ugly duckling”)
- Catches on clothing or causes ongoing irritation
Even if a mole is not dangerous, removal may be appropriate for comfort or cosmetic reasons once it has been medically assessed.
Professional Mole Assessment at Adare Dermatology
Every mole removal at Adare Dermatology begins with a thorough skin examination. We use clinical expertise and, where appropriate, dermatoscopic assessment to examine moles in detail.
During your consultation, we will:
- Assess whether the mole is benign or suspicious
- Advise whether removal is medically necessary or optional
- Discuss the safest and most appropriate removal method
- Explain aftercare and scarring expectations
If there is any concern about skin cancer, removal is performed for diagnostic purposes and the tissue may be sent for laboratory analysis.
Mole Removal Methods in Our Clinic
Mole removal is a minor medical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. The method used depends on the type, size, location, and clinical features of the mole.
Surgical Excision
The mole is removed completely with a small margin of surrounding skin. This method allows for full histological analysis and reduces the risk of recurrence.
Shave or Superficial Removal
For clearly benign, raised moles, a superficial removal technique may be suitable. This is often chosen for comfort or cosmetic reasons after careful assessment.
All procedures are performed in a sterile clinical environment with patient safety as the top priority.
Aftercare and Healing
Following mole removal, you will receive clear aftercare instructions to support healing and minimise scarring. Mild discomfort, redness, or swelling is normal and usually settles quickly.
We advise on:
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Sun protection to reduce scar pigmentation
- Expected healing timelines
- When to seek review
Most patients return to normal activities shortly after the procedure.
Scarring and Cosmetic Outcomes
Any procedure that breaks the skin can leave a scar, but careful technique and appropriate aftercare help achieve the best possible cosmetic result. We always discuss scar risk in advance so you can make an informed decision about removal.
