Why Your Injectables Might Not Be Improving Your Skin Quality
By Dr Naomi Mackle
Dermatology Specialist and Medical Director, Adare Dermatology Clinics
Skin boosters, exosomes, and "salmon DNA" are heavily marketed as modern remedies for ageing skin. At Adare Dermatology Clinics (ADC), skin boosters are part of our clinical offering, and we believe they serve a valid purpose. However, we frequently see patients who have invested significantly in injectable treatments only to feel disappointed that their overall skin quality remains unchanged.
Understanding why this happens requires looking at what different aesthetic treatments actually achieve, and how genuine, long-term skin health is created.
1. Skin Health vs. Looking Younger: The Crucial Distinction
Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers remain highly effective when administered correctly. Anti-wrinkle treatments temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for dynamic expression lines, whilst fillers restore volume lost during the natural ageing process. Both options can leave you looking fresher and more youthful.
Crucially, however, neither treatment alters the intrinsic quality of the skin itself. They do not address:
- Texture and surface roughness
- Overall tone, redness, and pigmentation
- Enlarged pores and sun damage
- Crepiness and surface laxity
An individual can have beautifully smooth features and restored structural volume while still displaying dull, uneven, or sun-damaged skin. Improving skin quality demands an entirely different approach
2. The Foundation: Essential Daily Skincare
Before considering any in-clinic procedure, a strong, evidence-based daily regimen is essential. In-clinic procedures will not deliver optimum results on skin that lacks solar protection or has an impaired moisture barrier.
-
Daily Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen: The single most critical step in any routine, as the majority of visible skin ageing stems from UV exposure.
-
Vitamin C (20% L-Ascorbic Acid): A potent antioxidant that defends against environmental pollution and UV damage, brightens skin tone, and supports collagen synthesis.
-
Retinol and Retinoids: Vitamin A derivatives backed by decades of clinical evidence for refining texture, fading pigmentation, and smoothing fine lines.
-
Barrier Support: A resilient skin barrier preserves hydration, calms inflammation, and ensures the skin can tolerate active topical ingredients and clinical treatments.
3. The Truth About Skin Boosters
"Skin boosters" refer to a broad category of injectable products designed to enhance skin quality and hydration rather than build volume.
-
Hyaluronic Acid Boosters (e.g., Profhilo): Disperse across the dermal layer to boost hydration and impart a subtle plumpness.
-
Amino Acid Complexes (e.g., Jalupro): Combine hyaluronic acid with key amino acids—the fundamental building blocks of collagen. (Offered at ADC as a gentle, low-downtime choice).
-
Polynucleotides and PDRN ("Salmon DNA"): Purified DNA fragments intended to encourage cellular repair and collagen formation.
-
Exosomes: Cell-signalling particles typically applied topically alongside microneedling or laser therapies rather than injected directly.
What Skin Boosters Realistically Deliver
Skin boosters provide genuine but subtle enhancements in hydration, surface radiance, and fine lines—particularly across delicate areas like the neck and under the eyes.
However, the honest clinical assessment is that most published research on boosters remains small-scale, short-term, and frequently vendor-funded. Exosome formulations vary significantly across manufacturers and lack comprehensive study. Furthermore, skin boosters cannot lift sagging tissue or match the transformative results of energy-based devices.
Is Jalupro superior to other boosters?
While supplying raw amino acids alongside hyaluronic acid theoretically aids collagen production, no robust head-to-head clinical trials exist to prove its superiority over competitor products. It is offered at ADC simply as a gentle, reliable option for subtle enhancement.
4. In-Clinic Treatments That Truly Remodel Skin
For substantial, measurable improvements in skin health, laser and energy-based modalities possess the longest clinical track record and strongest scientific evidence. These therapies function by triggering the skin's natural healing cascade, encouraging genuine structural remodeling that injectables cannot achieve.

Treatment |
Primary Skin Concerns Addressed |
|
Medical Microneedling |
Texture, acne scarring, fine lines, and enlarged pores (via natural collagen induction). |
|
Secret RF (RF Microneedling) |
Skin laxity, rough texture, deep scars, and pores (combines physical needling with targeted heat). |
|
Fractional $\text{CO}_2$ Laser |
Deep wrinkles, pronounced sun damage, scarring, and rough texture (one of the most effective resurfacing tools available). |
|
Vascular Laser |
Facial redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea. |
|
Limelight IPL |
Sun damage, uneven skin tone, redness, and age spots. |
|
Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser |
Target pigmented lesions and specific forms of hyperpigmentation. |
Note: Energy-based procedures generally involve a degree of downtime. The appropriate selection depends on individual skin type, lifestyle, and primary concerns.
5. Identifying the Right Treatment Path

Skin boosters have a valuable place in a skincare journey, but they are not a universal fix.
Skin Boosters are best suited if you:
- Desire modest improvements in glow, hydration, and fine lines.
- Wish to avoid the recovery time associated with energy-based devices.
- Suffer from early crepiness under the eyes or around the neck.
- Want to maintain skin condition between stronger clinical procedures.
Energy-based treatments are preferable if you:
Main concerns are sun damage, deep pigmentation, redness, scarring, or noticeable skin laxity. In these cases, energy devices offer far better return on investment.
6. How We Design a Customised Skin Plan at ADC
-
Comprehensive Consultation: Detailed evaluation of skin type, current concerns, and historical treatment response.
-
Home Foundation: Establishing daily sun protection, a suitable retinoid, Vitamin C, and barrier support.
-
Primary Treatment: Selecting targeted energy, IPL, or microneedling treatments to address core structural concerns.
-
Targeted Enhancement: Integrating skin boosters, anti-wrinkle injections, or fillers where they offer clear clinical value.
-
Ongoing Review: Periodically evaluating results and updating the treatment plan over time.
