Thread veins
Thread veins, commonly called spider veins, are tiny prominent veins just below the skin surface.
Do you have visible red or purple veins on your face or legs?
Thread veins—also known as spider veins—are small, dilated blood vessels just beneath the skin. They often appear on the face, legs, or body and may worsen with age, sun exposure, or pregnancy.
What Causes Thread Veins?
- Genetics – tend to run in families
- Ageing – thinning skin makes veins more visible
- Hormonal changes – including pregnancy and menopause
- Lifestyle factors – Sun exposure, smoking, or alcohol
- Underlying conditions – such as rosacea or varicose veins (legs)
Are They Harmful?
Thread veins are usually harmless but can be a cosmetic concern. On the face, they may be linked to rosacea. On the legs, if larger varicose veins are present, these may need to be treated first.
Our doctors will assess your skin and medical history, in most cases, thread veins are diagnosed visually. Occasionally, an ultrasound may be needed to check for deeper vein issues.
