PSORIASIS

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that speeds up the skin cell cycle, causing thick, red, scaly patches. It affects around 2% of the population and can impact both skin and joints.

It’s not contagious, but it often runs in families and may be linked to nail changes or joint pain (psoriatic arthritis). While there’s no cure, there are many effective treatments to help control it getting you your quality of life back.

What does it look like?

  • Red, raised plaques with thick white or silvery scale
  • Often appears on elbows, knees, scalp, lower back
  • Can be itchy or cause a burning sensation
  • In skin folds (groin, underarms, under breasts), it may look smoother and redder

Some people also develop:

  • Scalp psoriasis – often itchy and flaky like bad dandruff
  • Nail psoriasis – thick, yellowish nails that may lift from the nail bed
  • Psoriatic arthritis – swelling and stiffness in the joints (managed with a Rheumatologist)

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our dermatology doctors will usually diagnose psoriasis with a physical exam and medical history. The location, appearance, and feel of the patches help determine the type and severity. In rare cases, a biopsy may be needed.

Treatment Options

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are many options to help reduce symptoms and flare-ups:

  • Topical treatments (creams and ointments)
  • Phototherapy (light treatment)
  • Oral or injectable medications for more severe cases
  • Lifestyle advice (like stopping smoking or managing stress)

Our doctors will recommend a personalised plan based on your skin, symptoms and medical history.
