Keloid scarring

Keloids are a type of raised scar. They occur where the skin has healed after an injury.

Thick, raised scar that keeps growing?

Keloids are overgrown scars that form after skin injury such as cuts, surgery, acne, burns, tattoos or piercings. They can be itchy, uncomfortable and larger than the original wound.

Keloids are more common in:

  • Darker skin tones
  • Individuals with a family history of keloids
  • People using anabolic steroids (e.g. bodybuilders)

Treatment options

While keloid scars can’t always be cured, symptoms can be managed and appearance improved.

At Adare Dermatology, we offer:

  • Steroid injections – Help flatten the scar and relieve itching (usually a course of 6–8 injections, every 6 weeks)
  • Surgical removal – An option in selected cases, though recurrence is common and can be worse.

Treatment is tailored to your skin type and scar history. We’ll guide you through the safest and most effective options.
