What causes hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition causing excessive sweating beyond what the body needs for temperature regulation. It can be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to other medical conditions. Primary hyperhidrosis often has no clear cause but is linked to overactive sweat glands triggered by overactive nerves, usually affecting the palms, soles, underarms, or face. Genetics can play a role, as it often runs in families. Secondary hyperhidrosis can result from medical conditions like thyroid disorders, diabetes, infections, menopause, or certain medications. Stress and anxiety can worsen sweating episodes. Treatment depends on severity and underlying causes, ranging from topical treatments to surgery.
Hyperhidrosis is probably an abnormal response to emotional stimuli and may be limited to the axillae or to the extremities but occasionally both areas are affected.
Symptoms
In pathological hyperhydrosis, visible sweat, wet clothes and a clammy handshake are all common. This can be embarrassing for the patient and also can interfere with work and personal relationships.
Diagnosis
Your doctor will assess which kind of hyperhidrosis you have. You might need a blood test for diabetes, thyroid overactivity or other conditions.

Can hyperhidrosis be cured?
Hyperhidrosis cannot always be completely cured, but it can be effectively managed. Treatments aim to reduce excessive sweating and improve quality of life. Options include prescription antiperspirants, oral medications, iontophoresis (a device that uses electrical currents), Botox injections to block sweat glands, or microwave therapy to destroy sweat glands. In severe cases, surgery to remove sweat glands or cut nerves (sympathectomy) may be considered. Some underlying causes, like hormonal imbalances or medication side effects, can be treated to resolve secondary hyperhidrosis. While a permanent cure is not guaranteed, many people achieve long-term control and relief with appropriate treatment plans.
