Acne Vulgaris
Symptoms include blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and painful nodules under the skin.
Worried it's acne?
If you’ve been Googling your symptoms and wondering whether it’s acne, or if your current products aren’t working — we can help.
Acne Vulgaris is a very common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become blocked with dead skin cells, oil (sebum), and bacteria. This can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and cysts.
The most common trigger is hormonal changes, especially during puberty, which increase oil production. If this oil isn’t properly managed, it can lead to breakouts.
Around 80% of people experience acne at some point in their lives, and up to 20% of those may develop scarring. For many, acne is mild and can be managed with the right over-the-counter skincare. For others, it can persist into adulthood and require medical treatment.
Symptoms
Acne typically appears on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. It can range from mild to severe:
- Mild acne: A few blackheads, whiteheads, or occasional pimples. This usually responds well to a consistent skincare routine.
- Moderate acne: More widespread blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and oily skin. A stronger skincare regime is needed — we recommend the REFORM Skincare Anti-Blemish Kit and an oil-free moisturiser to prevent dryness. If this isn’t enough, it’s time to consult a doctor.
- Severe acne: Painful cysts, significant inflammation, and scarring. Prescription treatments like topical medications, oral antibiotics, or the oestrogen contraceptive pill may be required. In persistent or scarring cases, Roaccutane (isotretinoin) may be considered — but only under our specialist supervision that includes regular blood tests.
Diagnosis
Most people can recognise the signs of acne, but if your current skin care routine isn’t working, or if you’re unsure whether you’re dealing with acne or a similar condition (like rosacea), a medical consultation is essential. Our doctors will assess your skin and guide the best next steps.
Treatment Options
Alongside the treatments mentioned above, our doctors may also recommend treatments that will not only improve the acne but will also have the added benefits of improving skin texture, open pores or scarring:
- Secret RF (Radiofrequency Needling)
- Non-radiofrequency needling
- Chemical peels
- Laser Treatment – coming soon to our London Clinic.
